People often ask me how long it takes to make one of my larger bead work pieces.  They suspect it takes time but they are still surprised to find out how much!  I work fulltime as an attorney so I have only nights and weekends to create artwork (and sometimes my legal career takes even these hours).  The 8.5 x 11 inch "Samurai X" took a little over one (1) month to complete, working every evening and ten hours a day over the weekends. I was living in Barrow, Alaska on the Arctic Slope at the time - the northernmost community in North America - so remote the only way in or out is by air, ten (10) months of the year.  Having few distractions helps get the work done more quickly.  I moved back to Anchorage in 2006 so the larger Snowy Owl and the Great Gray Owl each took about six (6) months to complete.  Although time consuming beadwork is worth all the effort. I prefer to sew my pieces on jackets so they can be seen and enjoyed, a walking art exhibit.  It gives the person standing behind me in line something beautiful to look at.  Never underestimate the power of beauty to change the world for the better!
